A number of the Psalms were written by song writers on David’s
staff, especially those who served in the Lord's Temple there in Jerusalem. The chapters we're reading todat involve the songs written by a man by the name of Ethan. Apparently Ethan writes this amazing song with the distinct purpose of coming to the defense of his King…King David. His goal is to remind the nation that David is God's chosen ruler. It must have been an amazing sight, but Ethan had a front row seat in witnessing all of the drama surrounding King David’s life. Within that drama were those Israelites who doubted the veracity of King David’s right to rule.
Back in Judges 16, you can read the story of how God anointed David. God used Samuel the prophet to anoint him as king. But, as time goes on,
there are many people who have begun to doubt David’s right to rule. In his song, Ethan reminds the people of Israel about the prophecy regarding David and
how his throne (through Jesus Christ as a descendant of David) would last
forever.
That’s why Ethan recites in chapter 89 how God
said – “I have made a covenant with
David, my chosen servant…I will establish your descendants as kings forever;
they will sit on your throne from now until eternity.” Little did people understand at the time that God would literally fulfill this prophecy through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus was born through a virgin named Mary,
a natural descendant of King David, and was fathered by Joseph, also a natural descendant
of King David.
The prophecy is completely fulfilled when Jesus (in the future) comes back to rule on Earth during
His millennial reign. At that time, the Bible tells us that Jesus will sit on the throne of David, his ancestral father) in Jerusalem and rule
the entire world.
There are many other things you can draw from this
song.
One of the verses of the song tells how the highest angelic powers throughout the
heavens can’t compare to the Lord. Ethan says, “He (God) is far more awesome
than all who surround the throne.”
Another great verse tells how the heaven and earth belong to God – He created
them all.
I love how Ethan reminds us in chapter 90 of the brevity of
life and how soon life passes by. He provides us all with a great lesson in verse 12 when
he writes, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in
wisdom.” If we could see our lives from
God’s perspective and just how quickly life passes by, don't you think we would make life changes. For example, perhaps we'd worry
less, trust more, do more to honor Him, and make sure our life is filled with
the things that make good and Godly sense.
When is the last time you’ve examined your life, or even thought of how short your life really is...compared to eternity. Can you say that you’ve allowed God to accomplish in you and through you those things He's wanted to accomplish?
Every hour that passes will be an hour we'll never get back. Moment by moment our life is slipping away on a trajectory where our final destination is to stand before God and give account of how well we conducted the life He gave us.
What about you? Have you been a good
manager of the time and life God's given you? Are you making the
most of your day, your week, your month…your life? Is God happy with how you've turned out and with what you're doing with the talent and resources He's given you?
If not...it’s never too late to make things right with God. You don’t need to
make a new year’s resolution. You just need to open your eyes today to the
reality that your life matters to God, that He’s made you for a special reason,
and it’s up to you to fulfill the purpose He's created you for.
If you need to make some changes, do something about it today! Pray to the Lord. Ask
for His forgiveness. Then ask for His help to allow you to live life on
purpose, by His design. Take one step at a time in developing new habits. Before long,
you’ll be living the life God destined it to become...for His Glory!
