King David begins and ends these three chapters begging God to
listen to him, to have mercy upon him as he prays. Have you ever felt like you
needed to pray out of desperation? I’m sure it’s a universal thing we’ve all
done. Anxiety, stress, deadlines at work, pressures within a marriage, and the
list goes on about all the issues we’ve had to face in life. Perhaps you’ve
felt like King David who pleaded with God saying in Psalms 88:3, “my soul is
full of troubles.”
Throughout the entire book of Psalms, you can find David
praying time and time again out of desperation. And, for good reason. He brought a lot of trouble on himself and the
nation of Israel. You have to remember, David was a valiant warrior. He’s
conquered all of the armies surrounding the nation of Israel. All he’s ever
known since he was a young teenager was war. Many scholars believe he was only
about 14 or 15 years of age when he slew Goliath. As such, David made many enemies.
Yet, in the midst of his
desperation, he also confesses to God some amazing realities. He reminds God that
he knows that He is a merciful God, One who has the sovereign ability to help
in time of need.
David even prophesied many fascinating things about God.
First, he declares, “among the gods there is none like him.” David knew there was no other god, but he’s
talking personally to God saying basically, “God, although all those nations
out there claim to have a god, I know down in the depth of my heart there is no
one like you.”
Secondly, David confesses that no one has performed more amazing things throughout history than what He has done. Thirdly, and most importantly, King David also prophesied that one day all
of the nations will bow before God and give glory to his name and that He alone
is the only God of the universe.
David is right you know! One day all of mankind will bow before
God and give Him glory. Everyone who has ever cursed His holy name will bow in
agony and wish they'd never said the wicked things they’ve said or committed the
evil things they’ve done. There is a day of reckoning for ALL of us, even
believers. We may not appear before the Judgement Seat of Christ and be judged
for our sins, but we’ll have to give an account of our faithfulness in service
to Him. We either gain rewards or lose them based on what we've allowed God to do in us and through us. Remember, we are his messengers to the world. What are you doing to fulfill that role?
Perhaps instead of pleading for God to help you with some
issue that’s pressing you, maybe you need to be begging God to help you to become
a more faithful follower of Jesus! When you live your life in the light of the fact that one day we will bow before Jesus is our Judge and give account for our lives. I'm sure we will all wished we had lived differently.
And guess what? There’s
no better time to start than NOW! Plead with him today and ask for His help in making you a fully devoted follower of Jesus!
