Luke 3-5 - "

As we learned in our last bible study, Luke is a medical doctor - a man of science. And, as a scientist, Luke puts a lot of emphasis on the need for facts. So, in order to make sure his reader understands the timing of the events of Jesus' coming, Luke takes several steps in detailing the time. 

First, he mentions that Tiberias, the emperor of Rome, was in his 15th year of reign when Jesus' ministry began. Since Tiberias ruled from 14 A.D to 37 A.D., this would put the date around 29 A.D.  

To add certainty to the date, Luke also mentions other leaders who were in place at the same time - in case anyone is in doubt.  For example, Herod Antipas was the ruler of Galilee at the time and Herod's brother Philip was reigning over the territory of Iturea and Traconitis - which is located in modern day Lebanon and southern Syria. He also mentions that Annas and Caiaphas were the high priests in Jerusalem at the time as well. So...Luke narrows down the exact time that Jesus bursts onto the scene to be baptized by John and begin His earthly ministry. To Luke, the facts matter.

Baptism By John The Baptist

Baptism basically began in the Old Testament, but wasn't necessarily called baptism. Under the law of Moses, God demanded that lepers and those who were ceremonially unclean to go and bath entirely (and even shave their skin) to symbolize their cleansing. Since John the Baptist's father was a priest, John would have been familiar with these purification rituals that symbolized cleansing. In fact, John was so sick of the wickedness and spiritual uncleanliness of the people that he demanded that those who truly wanted to be "clean" in God's eyes not only needed to "repent" of their sins and turn to God, but to prove that they meant it with all their hearts by being baptized by total immersion in water as he said in 3:3 - "Then John went from place to place on both sides of the Jordan River, preaching that people should be baptized to show they they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven"

Jesus Time Had Come!

It's interesting to note that Luke says that "Everyone was expecting the Messiah to come soon and they were eager to know if John might be the Messiah."

Based on Old Testament scriptures, the Jews had mathematically calculated that their Messiah was soon to come...just as many Christians today believe that Jesus could come soon for His 2nd Coming!  Then, they could calculate His coming based on Jeremiah's prophecy.  Today, we see the signs of Jesus' 2nd coming through His own prophecies and those of many others!

To show the importance of baptism as a symbol of repentance of sin and a turning to God, Jesus sought to be baptized by John.  Although John was confused by it (as seen in the other Gospels), Jesus assured John that it had to be done. This is why I always teach that the first act of obedience that a new believer should want to exercise is that of baptism. If you haven't been baptized, get it done!  It doesn't save you, but it is an act of obedience to the Lord and a testimony to everyone that you've repented of your sins and turn to God.

What about infant baptism?

Infant baptism is essentially an empty gesture and has absolutely NO biblical call for it.  While perhaps many parents see it 

  

Luke 1-2 - "Miracles That Led To Jesus' Birth!"

In the Bible, Luke is traditionally identified as Luke the evangelist, one of the four gospel writers alongside Matthew, Mark, and John. He is also the author of the book of Acts of the Apostles, which continues the narrative from the gospel of Luke and chronicles the early spread of Christianity and the rise of the Christian Church.

Traditionally, Luke has been understood as a medical doctor. This has been reinforced by Christian tradition and historical writings. In fact, the Bible identifies Luke as a beloved physician, as mentioned in Colossians 4:14 where Paul refers to him as “Luke, the beloved physician”. As a medical doctor and a man of science, Luke feels compelled to provide a fact based, accurate narrative about the life and ministry of Jesus. As a man of science, he feels convicted to make sure to describe much of the overwhelming evidence that proves Jesus IS the Son of God who was prophesied as the coming Messiah as detailed throughout the entire Old Testament.

He admits that many people have set out to write stories about the life of Jesus, but Luke wants to make sure that these stories come directly from the disciples of Christ who had an eye-witness account of His miracles and His power. That is why he states in 1:3 that he had “carefully investigated everything from the beginning.”

In verse 3, Luke identifies who he is writing this letter to. He is writing to a man by the name of Theophilus. He gives him the title “most honorable”. This term was a formal title of respect, often used to address individuals of high social or political standing. Theophilus is traditionally believed to have been a person of influence and authority, possibly a Roman official or someone prominent in the early Christian community. He has mentioned twice in the gospel of Luke and once in the book of Acts.

It's interesting to note that the four gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, each begin their books with different interests in mind. Matthew is interested in capturing the attention of the Jewish people and showing that Jesus was part of the genealogy of King David where his lineage would produce the Messiah. Mark wasted no time with genealogy, but rather plunged directly into the ministry of John the Baptist. John begins with explaining that Jesus is the eternal God and is the word that spoke everything into existence. However, Luke takes a different route. Luke's gospel goes further back and shares how John the Baptist was born through Zechariah and Elizabeth and the familial relationship they had with Mary and Joseph, the parents of the Lord Jesus.

Luke begins with a story of John the Baptist. It's an amazing story detailing a miracle that the other writers do not address. Even though Zechariah and Elizabeth were older in years and somewhat beyond the childbearing years, Zechariah was begging God for a miracle to have a son. One of the most amazing stories to come out of the Bible is this story about John the Baptists birth! In fact, it begins with the Angel Gabriel, who stands in the very presence of God, and who is commanded by God to go to Zechariah while he's working in the temple and share the good news of the birth of his son and how his ministry will change the lives of thousands of people.

I find it interesting that Gabriel mentions that John will be filled with the Holy Spirit from birth!

Sadly, like so many of us today, Zechariah prayed for a miracle. And even though God sent his angel Gabriel to announce to Zechariah that is prayer would be answered, Zechariah could not believe it. As a result of his lack of faith, God took away his ability to speak until the child was born!

Keep in mind, the way to please God is through our faith and him. The Bible tells us explicitly in Hebrews 11:6 that without faith it is impossible to please God.

Within the same chapter, Luke shares the details of how the angel Gabriel also came to Mary and spoke of the virgin birth of Jesus.

Another amazing fact that the other writers failed to mention is that when Mary went to visit Elizabeth a few months later, the infant John jumped inside of Elizabeth's womb as Mary approached Elizabeth bearing the son of God in her womb. Both Mary and Elizabeth must have been a tremendously excited to know that they were bearing sons who would change the world!

It's interesting to note in verse 48 that Mary describes herself as “a lowly servant girl” and was amazed that God Almighty would even consider her for such an amazing opportunity!

As we begin chapter 2 we see more of some amazing miracles and proof that Jesus is the son of God!

First, the physician Luke describes Jesus as being a descendant of King David – which was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Luke also lets his readers know that Jesus would come out of Nazareth of Galilee, also fulfilling Old Testament scripture detailing that he would not only be a Nazarene from Nazareth but also out of Galilee. To the Jewish people, these were two profound statements!!

Second, Luke speaks of the incredible account of how the shepherds near Bethlehem witnessed angels by the thousands praising God and giving glory to God for the birth of the Messiah. Once the shepherds heard the good news from the angels they hurried to the village and found baby Jesus wrapped in a dirty blanket and lying in a Manger. I'm sure both Mary and Joseph were amazed by the stories the shepherds told of the angels who came and visited them and shouted glory to God for the birth of their son.

Third, Luke also tells the amazing story of how the godly man by the name of Simeon who was eagerly awaiting the coming of the Messiah was led by the Holy Spirit to Mary and Joseph and Jesus and prophesied over the baby as the salvation for all people. This prophecy took place just eight days after Jesus was born while Mary and Joseph were taking Jesus to be presented to the high priest as the Mosaic law required.

Fourth, Luke continues to tell the stories that others fail to tell. Luke tells of the story of Anna, a prophetess who was 84 years of age. She also Saul Mary and Joseph standing in the temple with baby Jesus and begin to praise God and shared with everyone how he was the Messiah all of the nation of Israel had been looking for many years!

Fifth, Luke continues with another story about Jesus at the age of 12. Jesus and his parents would go to Jerusalem for the Passover festival every year and on this particular occasion he began to teach many of the priests about things they had questioned. In 2:46-47, we find that Jesus was left behind by his parents accidentally. However, God had his own plans for his son! For three days Jesus spoke with the religious leaders of the temple both asking questions and answering questions. And all who heard him were amazed at Jesus’ understanding and answers to the scriptures!

In verse 52 we read one of the most important scriptures. This particular verse should apply to all of us! It says that Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people. Oh that that would happen to us! May we do the same thing! May we also grow in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people.

Only God can provide His favor on your life! Have you asked him for His Favor? If not, ask him right now and be sure to live for Him!

Mark 15-16 - "9 Facts About Jesus' Death"

Have you ever been charged with a crime?  I haven't, but I've been associated with those who have. Justice seems like, in many ways, just a word. We ALL want justice, but so many judges and attorneys today will tell you that the court system isn't about getting justice, it's about what attorneys and judges can get away with. If you've got a lot of money and can hire an expensive and experienced law firm, you can get away with murder. And, at the same time, if you've got liberal district attorneys who let criminals back on the street after being arrested for a major crime - i.e. murder, sexual assault, major theft, or even assaulting a police officer(s) - then justice seems like an arbitrary word.

Jesus didn't get justice. Even 2,000 years ago, Jesus was the victim of a victimless crime and those in charge of imputing and protecting justice allowed a kangaroo court to put to Jesus to death - no jury, false testimony, and a governor who was more interested in pleasing the people than in doing the right thing!

Our bible study today sadly opens up today with the Jewish spiritual leaders (who were jealous of Jesus) making an attempt to circumvent the usual justice system set up by the Jews. They wanted Jesus dead! And, there was no other way to get that done than to bypass the typical Jewish "justice" system and thrust him before Pilate, the Roman governor over the Jewish territory. These Jewish leaders admitted it was against their law to put Jesus to death. So, they decided to let Rome do it.

To mock Jesus, they bound him up and took him to Pilate. The accused him of "many crimes".  However, Pilate didn't believe anything they brought before him was a crime at all.  Most of the testimony of witnesses were contradicted. And as sad as it might sound, these leaders were less interested in the many miracles He performed on the Sabbath Day, but found it offensive that He did these miracles on the Sabbath. While Jesus tried to teach these religious idiots that the Sabbath was designed for man's benefit and goodness, these leaders still had their own man-made religious rules about the Sabbath - which actually flew in the face of why God allowed for a Sabbath Day in the beginning.

Notice the timeline of events:

1.  Jesus is accused of many baseless crimes!  Notice how Jesus didn't rebut these crimes. Instead, by remaining silent He fulfilled the Scriptures found in Isaiah 53:7 - "He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth.

- Another reason Jesus didn't defend Himself is because He knew His purpose!  He knew He had to die on the cross!  He knew He was our ONLY means of salvation from Hell and from being eternally separated from God!

2.  Pilate tries to defend Jesus!  In verse 14, Pilate asked the religious leaders - "Why, what crime has he committed?" Pilate's examination of Jesus was fairly exhaustive. Notice what Pilate said in Luke 23:14-15, Pilate says, "I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent. Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty."

- In other words, not only did the first trial before Herod end in finding "no fault" in Jesus, but also in the second trial with Pilate the outcome was the same!  Justice for Jesus was a sham!

Have you ever witnessed a sham in the court system?  If you're above the age of 30 and watch the news, you've seen and heard of countless shams within our justice system - crooked attorneys, bribed judges, and a penalty system where 100% of the people of any country would say is in total chaos!  

3.  Crowd pleasing is NOT justice!  By verse 15, Pilate is worried about his political position as governor more so than doing what's right.  In order to pacify the people, he himself committed the greatest crime - putting to death the Son of God!  However, as we read in the book of Matthew, the chief priests and the crowd said that the blood of Jesus could be blamed on them and their children!!!  Oh...what a mistake!!!!  However, Jesus forgave them for what they did while He was hanging on the cross!!! He knew they had no idea of the gravity of this major, major blunder that would eternally haunt them!!!

- There is some evidence showing that Pilate eventually became a believer in Jesus as the true Son of God. If so, Jesus forgave him of his sin.  However, if he didn't believe in Christ, I imagine that even now Pilate (as one writer put it) would be in Hell still trying to wash the blood from his hands saying, "Will they never be clean of this innocent man's blood?"

Have you ever tried to be a crowd pleaser to the point of shaming Jesus?  Have you ever been ashamed of praying over a meal at a restaurant?  Have you ever been ashamed or fearful of telling your friends about Jesus?

4. Jesus receives the utmost humiliation!  I can't even imagine how our Heavenly Father endured the events of Mark 15:16-20 as the Roman soldiers stripped Jesus of his clothes, beat him, mocked him, pulled his beard out of his face (another passage), and did it until they were "tired" of mocking Him!

- Jesus left His throne of glory, and if it wasn't enough for Him to take on the flesh of wicked humans, we wicked humans have to humiliate Him more!  I can only imagine how He must have felt when He said in John 17:5 - "Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began.

5. Jesus, our Helper, needed help that day!  I love the following article by Clay Carter found in The Sampson Independent which describes this event so remarkably. Let me provide some excerpts worth noting:

"Jesus fell to the ground under the burden of the cross. After their efforts to get Him to continue on His way, the Roman soldiers are in trouble, looking for a solution to the situation. According to Roman law, they could force a traveler to help carry the burden for a mile. They found Simon of Cyrene, seized him, and put the cross on his back to take it after Jesus. Simon of Cyrene was a Jew who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover Feast. To hasten Jesus’ execution by crucifixion the soldiers forced Simon to carry the cross, which weighed approximately 88 pounds, a distance of three quarters of a mile from the fortress of Antonia to Calvary. God is always purposeful, and He may have directed the soldiers to choose Simon of Cyrene to carry the Lord’s cross for a portion of the way to Calvary. We must not lose sight of the fact that Immanuel (God with us), the Creator, the One who carries our burdens accepted help from a man. What a lesson in humility. And we know that part of the execution process involved shameful, public humiliation. Simon did not merely spectate; he also partook in the Lord’s advance toward crucifixion. If we imagine the scene along the way, we envision crowds taunting the Lord as He bears the weight of His cross. The people probably jostled each other to see the Christ go by, the One to whom they so recently cried “Hosanna! Hosanna!” Isaiah says, “He was despised and rejected by men…He was despised, and we esteemed Him not” (Isaiah 53:3). Matthew and Mark say Simon “was pressed into service” to carry the cross, while Luke says Simon “was seized” and had the cross laid on him. In each account, Simon is pressed into service. The passages do not say he volunteered. In a manner of spiritualizing what Simon did, we, too, would rather not carry our own crosses. When the New Testament authors cite someone by name it shows us their significance in the story. The significance of Simon of Cyrene is that he helped Jesus during his time of need. Billions of humans have lived and died since the time of Jesus’ death on the cross, but still today we know Simon for what he did on Good Friday. Perhaps this shows us what God Himself remembers: our acts of kindness (no matter how small or large) to serve those who are suffering."

6. Death after only 6 hours on the cross!  I studied the crucifixion fairly heavily back in my high school and college days. I was going for a biology degree at the time and was interested in the historical and biological aspects of the notorious Roman crucifixion.  I found that it has been considered one of the most tortuous deaths ever invented by man. Jesus allowed Himself to take that route!  Why?  Because sin deserves the worst punishment - eternal death in Hell!  Hell was created by God for Satan and his angels after their fall from Heaven. Hell is the penalty for sin - even one!  Why? Because God is Holy!! A Holy God cannot stand sin. But thankfully, God is also Love! And it was because of His love that He allowed Jesus to go through the most horrendous death as a sacrifice for the sins of the world!

- 6 hours was a short time!  For most, it took a day or two or three. The longest on record is 9 days! And the reason the Roman soldiers broke the legs of the two men hanging with Jesus was to intentionally speed up the death of the other two. This would suffocate them quickly. 

7. Jesus rose on the First Day of the Jewish week!  This is why we, as Christians, worship Jesus in church on Sunday, the first day of the week.

8. Innumerable proof that Jesus rose from the grave! Jesus' appearance after His death on the cross was validated by over 500 people living in Jerusalem - people who were often skeptical until they had a chance to visit with him and see the scars in his hands and his feet. Over a hundred people were present when he was lifted back into Heaven!  Many of these same people were responsible for seeing thousands of Jews in that day being converted to believing that Jesus was, in fact, the Messiah they've long been looking for!

9. Our purpose is defined! Jesus made it simple as far as our purpose is defined - the share the gospel with the world, baptizing them, and leading them in discipleship!

Mark 13 - 14 - "The Dramatic Unveiling Of Future End Time Events"

Positioned within the Gospel of Mark, chapter 13 unfolds as a profound and prophetic passage, a doorway to insights about the future and the incredible plans that God has for the world. As the words of Jesus in Mark 13 unfurl, they become a beacon, guiding believers through the labyrinth of "end time" mysteries and stirring thoughts about the unprecedented events that await. 

While the disciples have fixed their eyes on the incredible architecture and beauty of the Temple in Jerusalem, Jesus knows something about the Temple His disciples didn't know. As they urge Him to marvel at the beauty surrounding them, Jesus announces what He sees for the Temple's future. He admits its beauty, but He also knows that some 40 years later (70 A.D.) the Romans will completely annihilate the Temple where all of its beauty will be destroyed.

We, as humans, are mostly focused on the present. We don't often look down the road as to where our lives are taking us, how our lives will one day be judged by God, and how the world will one day come to an end prior to the earthly arrival of Jesus in His Second Coming.  

However, as Jesus and His disciples sit on the Mount of Olives just across the Kidron Valley, Jesus describes to His disciples the future destruction of the Temple as well as future events prior to the end of the age. Their minds are mesmerized by His words and they curiously ask Him about future events - "Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled?”

The Unveiling of Unprecedented Future Events

So, let's list these events as Jesus tells them...

1)  False religious leaders - These religious leaders will make powerful claims about themselves, their prophecies, and their abilities to heal and proclaim themselves as mini-gods.  Unfortunately, there are hundreds of religious leaders throughout the world who make these claims. But, due to their lack of a true relationship with God and their lack of knowledge of God's Word, they will teach false doctrines that will deceive many followers of Christ.  Are we not seeing that today?  

2) Wars and threats of wars - Before the 2nd coming of Christ there will be an increase in instability among nations throughout the world. Even today, North Korea threatens nuclear warfare. Iran threatens to wipe Israel off the map. Radical Islamic groups are waging and threatening to destabilize the Middle East with war. Russia is trying to regain parts of Ukraine by war. And, yet there are many small wars that go unnoticed or unmentioned by the media.  Are we not seeing that today?

3) Persecution of Jews & Christians - Jesus warns us to be ready, because these things must happen. It's all part of God's plan to separate the true believers from the false ones. In fact, this assault on Jews and Christians will become so terrible that it will divide families and create an uprise of hate and vitriol towards them.  Are we not seeing that today?

4) The rise of the antichrist - Although Jesus doesn't mention the antichrist by name, it is he that will go into the Temple and into the Holy of Holies and remove the Ark of the Covenant and replace it with a sacrilegious object that totally desecrates and dishonors God Almighty!  Many scholars have speculated as to what that "sacrilegious object" will be, so we're really not exactly sure. Nevertheless, it is something that is an abomination to God!  And, Jesus warns the Jews that when this happens they should immediately flee into the mountains and hide!  Great persecution of the Jews will follow.  Are we not seeing that today?

5. Horrible world-wide calamity - Although Jesus doesn't go into the specifics of what that worldwide calamity would be that could potentially destroy ALL of mankind, we do get to read about in the book of Revelation. Notice what Jesus says in Mark 13:20 - "In fact, unless the Lord shortens that time of calamity, not a single person will survive. But for the sake of his chosen ones he has shortened those days."  Are we not seeing the beginning of those things today?

6. Unprecedented Astronomical events - The powers of the heavens will be shaken by God. Man's failure to love God and follow His commandments will bring out the frustration and wrath of God!  Imagine the sun being darkened! This event is still yet to come!

7. The 2nd Coming of Christ - Jesus tells His disciples that immediately after these prior events He will descend from Heaven with great power and glory and cause His angels to gather all true believers to join Him in Jerusalem. This event is still yet to come!

I love how Jesus ends His message!  He uses the example of the blossoming of the fig tree, that you can tell when summer is close by just observing the budding of the trees. And in like manner, we can use these signs to know when His coming is close at hand. 

Even though there have been many speakers and authors who have tried to prophecy of the exact timing of Jesus' coming, all have been proven wrong! Unbelievable! Jesus told us clearly in Mark 13:32 that no one (not even His angels) know the exact day or year of this event. However, there will always be people who will try to exploit the naivety of believers and non-believers alike and promote their findings as to the exact date and/or year...just to make a dollar. 

The Final Events of Jesus' Ministry on Earth during His first visit

Mark 14 describes the last few days prior to His crucifixion. 

Just days before He is betrayed by Judas Iscariot, a religious zealot who believed Jesus would be the one to conquer Rome and one of Jesus' disciples, Jesus visits the home of Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha (John 12). 

Jesus is anointed prior to His death by Mary, who takes an alabaster jar of some of the most expensive perfume made in Jesus' day, and anoints His feet with the perfume and wipes the excess off with her hair.  It was an amazing offering to our Lord. Oh that we would give up our most precious commodity and present it at Jesus' feet!!!  For most of us, it's our time, our talents, and our commitment to Him.

As Mark 14 captures the events leading up to Jesus Christ's crucifixion, it unfolds with a foreshadowing of Jesus' impending betrayal by Judas Iscariot. It then moves on to depict the Last Supper, during which Jesus institutes the Holy Communion, symbolizing the sacrifice of his body and blood.

The narrative intensifies in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prays fervently, expressing his human struggle with the imminent suffering and crucifixion. The disciples, however, repeatedly fail to stay awake and support him during this critical moment.

Later, Judas arrives with a group of religious leaders, signaling Jesus' arrest. Despite a brief resistance from one of his disciples, Jesus willingly surrenders, emphasizing the fulfillment of God's plan. The chapter closes with Peter denying Jesus three times, fulfilling Jesus' earlier prediction.

Mark 14 highlights themes of betrayal, sacrifice, and the human struggle with divine purpose, setting the stage for the dramatic events that unfold in the subsequent chapters of the Gospel.

Are you ready for His coming?  Are you living a life that pleases the One who will judge us for what we did with our brief time on earth?

Mark 10 - 12 - "How To Find Eternal Life"

Once again, the religious leaders are bent on finding a reason to find fault with Jesus’ teaching in the ultimate pursuit of killing Him. He’s embarrassed them long enough and the crowds are beginning to see that He’s possibly the Messiah which is weakening their influence within the Jewish population. So, they decide to test him on an old Mosaic law about the issue of divorce.

God’s View Of Divorce

Obviously, God hates divorce. Jesus tells the religious leaders that divorce goes against God’s original purpose in establishing the institution of marriage. And, although Moses provided an option for divorce in his day, Jesus explains that the divorce option was, unfortunately, the result of the hardness of people’s heart. As Moses sat before the people day after day to offer Godly counsel regarding the issues people were having, divorce must have come up many times. In frustration, Moses allowed it.

But, Jesus makes it clear that divorce was NEVER part of God’s plan. He also warns anyone -including the husband and wife – who causes the divorce has chosen to break what was God’s original plan.

Wow! I’d hate to be the person who initiated a divorce or became the causation of someone’s divorce!

Marrying another person is committing adultery. If a wife or husband chooses to divorce their spouse, they cannot marry without committing adultery with the new spouse. Wow! I realize that goes against our culture today, especially in America, but this is what Jesus said.

So few Christians truly see their marriage as God sees it. As Ephesians 5 tells us, the union between a man and woman which is a marriage in God’s eyes is a picture of Christ and the Church. Marriage is a holy event in the eyes of God! And because it is, be sure to marry ONLY that person whom God selects.  That’s why it’s important you only date a truly devoted follower of Christ and pray earnestly before marrying the person! God intended them to be a life-long partner.

The Path To Eternal Life

Jesus told us in Matthew 7 that the road to Heaven is narrow and there are few people who’ll be able to find it. While you might think that going to church or feeling spiritual is the way to Heaven, according to Jesus…it’s NOT.  In fact, He says there are MANY who will profess to know Him in the Judgement Day, but only a few will pass the standard.

So…what is the standard. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7 that Heaven belongs exclusively to those who truly follow God’s will.

Does your life exhibit God’s will?  If not, are you truly a born-again believer?  Has the Holy Spirit truly regenerated you?

Just recently, a committed Christian friend of mine told me how often his “Christian” wife curses God. Not only does she curse God often, but she admits that she feels controlled by Satan. Even though she went to Bible college and says she’s a Christian, her life reveals a totally different picture!  That’s why Jesus said in Matthew 7:18-20 – “A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions.”

This is what Jesus is trying to teach the disciples about the rich man in Mark 10. In spite of the rich man obeying all of the commandments since birth, he wasn’t willing to give up his wealth to follow Jesus. In other words, his wealth was more important to him than Jesus. Jesus tells us that nothing should be more important to us than Him.

How important is Jesus to you?  Can you think of anything you’re NOT willing to give up for Jesus?

As we move our study of Scripture into Mark 11 and 12, we see how the religious leaders are pressing hard to challenge His authority. They consequently confront Him about a variety of things in order to find fault with Him…such as:

-      Should they pay taxes to the Romans?

-      Who has given Him the authority to heal and teach?

-      Which is the most important commandment of all?

-      Will our bodies one day be resurrected?

Jesus answered all of their questions and eventually silenced them. No one could teach with such authority as Jesus did.

However, there are two very important lessons in Mark 12 that I’d like to address:

1.  The religious leaders often were misled by the Scriptures. In other words, they would look at the Scriptural teaching then add some kind of ancillary doctrine to it. They would add their own man-made rules and regulations. You see that clearly in Mark 12:13-17.

2.  Giving is a part of worshipping God, and He takes great notice of it!  When the poor widow woman gave 2 pennies to the Temple offering, Jesus took note to tell His disciples that she had given the most of all the people who gave. Why? Because the others gave a small percentage of what they could give. She, being poor, gave everything she had.  And, Jesus to it to heart!!!

He notices all of the little things we do. And, it touches His heart as much, if not more, than the big things we do!

Mark 7 - 9 - "Condemning Man-Made Religious Rules!"

Today’s bible study begins with a POWERFUL lesson for ALL churches throughout the world, as well as EVERY religion!

Jesus Condemns Man-Made Religious Rules & Traditions!

Maybe it shouldn't be surprising that Satan, who is well-versed in Scripture, deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-5) by twisting God’s Word to them. It should serve as a reminder to ALL Christians that a superficial knowledge of the Bible is insufficient in facing our spiritual adversary. To confront the enemy effectively, we must truly understand God’s Word, and to do so we must intentionally study it!

Sadly, many religions and most Christians are on a different, less challenging path than what God teaches in His Word.  As we look into today’s bible study, we see the religious leaders descending up Jesus at a location and confront Him about a “tradition” of the need to wash hands before you eat.  While it’s always a good idea, the religious leaders turned it into a mandate that caused them to elevate it ABOVE God’s Word.

I often think of my Catholics friends who pray to saints and Mary, or even my friends who are Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses who elevate the teachings of Joseph Smith and Charles Taxe Russell far beyond the teaching of Scripture.  Which surprises me!  Because Jesus is very clear hear in Matthew 7:6-9 who warns against such evil.

Listen to what Jesus said, “Jesus replied, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you, for he wrote, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.  Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.’  For you ignore God’s law and substitute your own tradition.” Then he said, “You skillfully sidestep God’s law in order to hold on to your own tradition.”

Did you hear what He said?

Man-made religious rules NOT found in Scripture is a FARCE!!! He tells them that these rules (man-made religious rules) are an attempt to “skillfully sidestep” God’s law!

And, to show them how they’re sidestepping God’s law, He provides a POWERFUL example that addresses the issue of unwashed hands. As an example, Jesus shares the old tradition that “sidesteps” the 5^th Commandment to “honor your father and mother.”  The religious leaders gave the people who committed such sin a way out.  Jesus condemned them for this!!

In essence, Jesus says – “And so you cancel the word of God in order to hand down your own tradition. And this is only one example among many others.”

Jesus deeply offended the religious leaders of His day by saying this!  And, I’m probably offending you as the reader if you’re guilty of holding man-made religious rules at the same level or above God’s Word!

Following man-made religious rules is very dangerous when trying to please a Holy and Perfect God!

After following the healing of a demon-possessed girl and a blind mute in Matthew 7, another miracle takes place in Matthew 8 - the feeding of over 4,000 people with only 7 loaves of bread and a few small fish. Keep in mind that only men were counted in those days. Yet many of these men had brought their wives and children (just as we read in the book of Matthew in the feeding of the 5,000), so there may have been over 10,000 people!

In spite of these POWERFUL MIRACLES, the religious leaders still want proof to the legitimacy of His ministry. Even though they saw these miracles, they didn’t want to believe they were miracles.

How many times have we seen or heard of God performing miracles, yet we still find ourselves NOT believing in God who can change your circumstances?

-          He can provide the money when it seems like there’s no way to get it!

-          He can save your marriage when your partner has left you!

-          He can get you the job that perfect for you when there just doesn’t seem to be a way!

-          He can cure your teenage daughter or son of addictions when it seems impossible!

-          He can heal any disease…and has often done it!

Why is it that we still don’t believe???

Even Jesus’ disciples had a hard time with believing!  While they saw hundreds and hundreds of miracles, and had just witnessed the feeding of the 5,000 then later the 4,000 plus people, Jesus had to remind them of these miracles while they were in the boat and worried that they had no bread.

It’s amazing how blind we can be!

Jesus Confirm He Is The Messiah

Jesus was curious as to what His disciples were thinking about Him. While He knew them better than themselves, this was His opportunity to allow Peter to proclaim the truth about Him – that He was, in fact, the Messiah the Jews have longed for.

Jesus Predicts His Death

While this passage (Mark 8:31) is one of many instances where Jesus tried to forewarn His disciples of His soon coming crucifixion, they just didn’t want to believe it!  And, when He was arrested by the Roman army, the disciples who told Jesus they were committed to Him, fled the scene and Peter denied ever knowing Him on three separate occasions.

Since Jesus knew this would eventually happen, He reminds them that they shouldn’t be ashamed of knowing Him.  In fact, Jesus says an amazing thing in Mark 8:38 – “If anyone is ashamed of me and my message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Jesus “ashamed” of me!

We should be vocal and proud of our Lord!  So many so-called Christians tell me, “Well, I don’t share Christ with others because it’s a personal thing.”

Wow!  That’s not it!  You’ve just lied!  The truth is, you’re ashamed of Him.  You’re ashamed of what other people will think of you if you mention Him or if you share your faith about Him!  Hogwash!  The reality is…you feel the same fear that Peter felt on that day when He denied the Lord 3 times!

What Do You Mean…”If I Can”

I love this statement by Jesus in Mark 9:23!!

In this true story, a man brings his son to Jesus who is horribly possessed by a demon or group of demons.  In fact, what makes this so horrible is that since the young man was a little boy the demons have tried to kill the boy through violent seizures.  When that didn’t work, they would force the boy to throw himself into a blazing fire. When that didn’t work, the demons would force the boy to drown in a nearby lake.

And while the father tried desperately to seek help from Jesus’ disciples, they couldn’t help this boy at all.

So…when Jesus sees an argument happening between the father and His disciples, He stops and asks about what’s going on. The father explains His disciples couldn’t help the situation at all and was very frustrated by it all.

Jesus, being frustrated with the father and His disciples, accused them of having no faith.

Amazingly, the father says, “Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.”

Jesus promptly asks, “What do you mean, if I can?  Anything is possible if a person believes.”

The father, who is desperate, cries out to Jesus and asks for His help to fully believe in Him and His ability to cure His son.

Jesus cast out the demon and then proceeded to share an important truth the disciples needed to  know about certain violent demons.

Although the disciples had cast out demons before, they were confused as to why they couldn’t cast this powerful demon out of the boy.

Notice what Jesus said in Mark 9:29 – “This kind can be cast out only by prayer and fasting.”

Who Will Be The Greatest In God’s Kingdom?

Sadly, this issue came up among the disciples.  And Jesus tells them that whoever would be the servant of others would be greater than the rest. 

Are you using your spiritual gifts and talents to serve the Lord and others?

Using Jesus Name!

The disciples were furious when they found out that another person (one outside of the group of disciples) was casting out demons in His name. They tried to stop him, but Jesus told them not to!  Any believer using Jesus’ name can cast out demons…if they believe!

What Hell Is Like

No one knows better about what Hell is really like than the One who created it! 

He created it for Satan and his demons when they rebelled against Him prior to the fall of Adam and Eve.  But because God is so Holy, sinful people can NOT stand in His presence. He won’t allow it!

When Adam and Eve sinned, sin entered the human race. And, God’s heart was broken!

However, because of man’s sinfulness, he is destined to Hell unless He invites Jesus into their heart as their Lord and Savior.  God knows of no other way for you and I to enter His Kingdom except through His Son, Jesus Christ.

If all mankind were to enter Heaven, then it was ridiculous that Jesus died on a cruel cross.

But since mankind is sinful, we needed a Savior – One who was sinless, who would carry our sins on the cross and die in our place to atone for our sinfulness!

Praise God!  We can have forgiveness of sin and eternal life when we put our faith and trust in Jesus – God’s Son who died for us so that we can spend an eternity in Heaven (and not Hell).

Jesus, I know that I’m a sinner. I know I need forgiveness. Thank you Jesus!  I believe in You and put my trust in You!

Mark 4 - 6 - "Jesus Can Calm Your Storm"

In today's bible study, we have the opportunity to learn some very powerful truths from the Lord Jesus as He shares numerous parables (stories with a spiritual lesson) and performs a number of unbelievable miracles that only God could perform!

The first parable begins with a story of "The Sower and the Seed". Jesus often spoke in parables, as we found out in the book of Matthew in our studies a last week. But, today, we learn "why." 

But, before I get to the why, it's important to note that the parable of the Sower and the Seed is Jesus' way of sharing tabout 4 different types of people in the world. These are the ones who hear God's word whereby the soil represents the type of heart and life that person has in relationship to God's truth. Since Jesus actually breaks down the meaning of this parable to His disciples a few verses later, I won't spend any time on it other than ask a pointed question..."Which type of soil does your life and heart represent? 

Is your heart and life reflective of the soil whereby when you hear the word of God being preached you like it, but Satan easily steals away the impact of God''s Word in your life?  Is it the rocky soil whereby you never really take the time for God Word to make an impact on your life before it's life-changing truth is snuffed out. Is it the thorny soil whereby the cares of this world are more important than God's Word? Or is your heart ready, willing, and totally receptive to allowing God's Word to change your life?

Unfortunately, His disciples didn't understand the parable, as most people within the crowd didn't either. Jesus told them they had the unique privilege of being a select group of men who could learn the full lesson and meaning of the parables He taught. Listen to what He says to them in verse 11-12, "He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secret of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders, so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they see what I do, they will learn nothing. When they hear what I say, they will not understand. Otherwise, they will turn to me and be forgiven.’” This was a fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy in the Old Testament.

And also in verse 34, "In fact, in his public ministry he never taught without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them."

Jesus needed His disciples to understand. After His death and resurrection, He would be relying on them to spread the Gospel to the world.

Why Parables?

So...why did Jesus speak in parables?  These parables were designed to provide just enough information to provide a spiritual truth, but only enough so that spiritually discerning people who fervently wanted the truth would understand. Notice verse 33, "Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand."

So...it begs the questions....why wasn't His message to the world simple and clear?  Why would He speak in hard-to-understand parables?

Well, He actually explains why...and it makes sense!

1. First of all, He spoke in parables to fulfill an Old Testament prophecy found in Isaiah 6:9-10.  In Isaiah's day, God spoke plainly through the prophet Isaiah and yet the people still wouldn't listen!  I know it's hard to believe, but that's what people do today!  No matter how plain and simple you make the truth, only those who are truly willing to accept the truth or be hungry for the truth would understand.

2. But most importantly, it was to see "who" would be willing to commit themselves to seeking out the truth. King Solomon wrote about this in Proverbs 8:17, “I love all who love me. Those who search will surely find me."

Jesus is interested in your heart and in your true desires to know Him.  He wants you to diligently seek Him.

The best human example I can give is in the example of how a man, who truly loves a woman, seeks and searches to know her heart, what she likes, what she cares about, what makes her happy and what makes her feel secure.  A man who falls in love with a woman works diligently to seek her out.  

The same is with Jesus!  He is looking for those who really want a relationship with Him, enough to diligently seek Him out.

Jesus Has Mercy On The Demons!

I find this story of the man possessed with demons in Mark 5 is amazing. Notice how the demons reacted when they saw Jesus. Instead of fleeing from Him, they (while possessing the man's body) ran to Him and fell down before Him.  In fact, they kept begging Jesus to not torment them or to send them afar off. Demons know that Jesus is God. Jesus created these beings as angels to serve Him. Unfortunately, they followed Satan in his rebellion against God and know they will one day be cast into a lake of fire to burn throughout eternity. Thus, they are frightened of Him.

Keep in mind...demons are former angels of God. They were created by Him. And, they aren't anything like God. They are only a little bit above us as human beings. Like us, they are very limited in strength and power. Yes, they are more powerful than a human being, but Jesus has given His followers authority over them. Therefore, we're not to fear them. They also can only be in one place at a time, like us. 

Jesus Walks On Water & Calms the Sea!

As Creator, the elements of this world and the universe are at His beck and call.  Can you imagine how amazed the disciples must have been to see Jesus calm the hurricane and the huge swells of sea water?

Listen, there isn't a storm in your life that Jesus can't conquer!  

If you're going through a storm - whether it be a financial storm, a marital storm, a relationship storm, or a physical storm...let Jesus walk on the water to you and calm your storm. Call out to Him today!  He'll come!  He's waiting for your invitation.

Mark 1 - 3 - "Jesus Begins His Earthly Ministry"

Today we begin our study in the Gospel of Mark. As we look at chapters 1 to 3, we get a profound sense of Jesus' purpose and divine calling.

Chapter 1: The Call to Transformation

The opening chapter of Mark paints a vivid picture of the arrival of John the Baptist. The interesting side note of this is that John is the cousin of Jesus. They probably played together at times when their families would get together for Jewish feasts. John's message was a powerful one as it served as preparation of the arrival of Jesus on the scene. His message was, "Prepare the way for the Lord," and it serves as a timeless call to action, urging us to prepare our hearts for the transformative power of Christ.

I'm sure John was transformed and encouraged after he baptizes Jesus in the Jordan River. As soon as Jesus rises from the water, the heavens open, and the Holy Spirit descended like a dove on Jesus. Then, a voice resonates, declaring, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.” This declaration echoes through the corridors of time, affirming our identity as beloved children of God.

What about you? Do you bring God joy? What kind of feelings, besides intense love, do you think our Heavenly Father feels when Jesus mentions your name? I hope it's one of great joy!

Just as Jesus emerged from the waters with a divine purpose, we too are called to rise from the depths of our circumstances, emerging with a renewed sense of purpose and identity. The baptismal waters symbolize the spiritual cleansing and rebirth that Christ offers when we repent of our sin and invite Him into our lives. If you've received Christ but have yet to be baptized, you need to get that done. Jesus commanded us to baptize all those who receive Him into their hearts. Baptism should be one of the first acts of obedience after you've invited Him to be the Lord of your life.

Chapter 2: Breaking Boundaries with Compassion

As we journey into Chapter 2, we encounter Jesus breaking societal norms and challenging the status quo. The healing of the paralytic man lowered through the roof serves as a powerful metaphor for Christ's transformative touch on our lives. Jesus not only forgives the man's sins but also commands him to take up his mat and walk. While the religious leaders of Jesus' day felt that it was wrong to heal on the Sabbath, Jesus quickly set them straight.

This chapter challenges us to reassess the boundaries we've placed on ourselves and others. Are we confined by societal expectations, personal limitations, or the weight of past mistakes? Jesus invites us to rise above these limitations, take up our mats, and walk in the freedom of His grace.

The calling of Levi, a tax collector, further illustrates Christ's radical inclusivity. Jesus dines with tax collectors and sinners, demonstrating that His kingdom knows no exclusions. In a world divided by judgment, Christ's example calls us to break down barriers, extend compassion, and embrace those who society may deem unworthy.

However, don't misunderstand God's point here!!

God wants us to love the sinner, but hate the sin. We can interact with God's love to those who walk in sin, but we're never to immerse ourselves in a relationship with these types of people. Why? Because we become who we hang with!! More often times than not, most people follow people into sin than into holy living. Jesus showered the sinner with love, but never surrounded Himself with them unless He was drawing them into a relationship with God. Jesus was very purposeful in this.

Chapter 3: Embracing the Cost of Discipleship

Chapter 3 plunges us into the heart of the Sabbath controversy. Jesus, who is Lord of the Sabbath, challenges the legalistic interpretation of this sacred day. The withered hand healed on the Sabbath becomes a symbol of liberation from religious bondage. Jesus prioritizes mercy over legalism, illustrating that love and compassion are at the core of His kingdom.

The calling of the twelve disciples marks a pivotal moment in Christ's ministry. The diverse backgrounds of these men—fishermen, tax collectors, zealots—highlight the inclusivity of Christ's mission. Likewise, our diverse talents, backgrounds, and experiences are valuable assets in advancing the kingdom of God. Christ's call to discipleship is an invitation to contribute our unique gifts to the grand tapestry of His redemptive work.

However, the journey of discipleship comes with a cost. The chapter concludes with Jesus' family expressing concern about His sanity, and the scribes accusing Him of being possessed by Beelzebub. Jesus responds by declaring the unbreakable bond of the spiritual family, united by a common commitment to God's will. Following Christ may lead to misunderstanding and opposition, but the rewards of eternal fellowship far outweigh the temporal challenges.

Conclusion:

Mark 1-3 invites us to embark on a journey of transformation, compassion, and discipleship. We are called to emerge from the waters of baptism with a renewed sense of identity, break down societal boundaries with Christ-like compassion, and embrace the cost of discipleship with unwavering commitment.

As we navigate the complexities of life, let us draw inspiration from the pages of Mark. Our lives, like those of the characters in this Gospel, are part of a grand narrative orchestrated by the divine Author. May the call to transformation, the challenge to break boundaries with compassion, and the invitation to embrace the cost of discipleship echo in our hearts, guiding us toward a purposeful and fulfilling life in Christ.
