If you've read today's passage you'll notice a big difference in the flow of the writings of Solomon. Instead of short stories and sayings, Solomon now begins with a random set of veritable truths. In other words, it almost seems as though he's being interviewed by someone who's asked the question, "Can you provide a simple statement of truth that gets right to the point?" And so begins Solomon with one or two verses that go together to form an important truth - about God, about goodness, about wickedness, and so many other things that pertain to life. And this type of teaching continues until we reach Chapter 22...so buckle in! There's a lot to take in.
Because each verse stands on it's own merit of truth, it would be difficult cover everything these chapters say, nevertheless let me share with you some of my thoughts of those verses that jump out at me. You might highlight the ones that jump out at you. Here we go.
At first glance, I see Solomon providing insight into the benefits and nature of those who are godly. Let's list them and use the following list to motivate us to be godly men and women!
- They're showered with blessings
- Their a happy memory to those who have known them
- They enjoy instruction
- Their words are a life-giving fountain
- They treasure knowledge
- Their words encourage many
- They can handle the storms of life with strength
- They're directed in life by honesty
- The are rescued from trouble
- They are celebrated when they succeed
Sounds good, doesn't it? May we all seek to be godly!
In chapter 11 and 12 we see many more incredible statements of truth (or proverbs). Here are a few:
- A nation falls who doesn't have wise leadership and many advisors
- It's foolish to belittle someone...and more sensible to just keep your mouth shut
- Don't co-sign a promissory note...it's safer to avoid it.
- The Lord delights in those who have integrity
- The more freely you give your money, time, and talents away...the more wealthy you become
- The generous people are the ones who truly prosper
- Don't trust in money...it will sink you like a ship
- A woman can either be a crown to her husband or like cancer within the bones.
- The godly care for their animals, but the wicked are cruel to them.
- The wise listen to the counsel of others, but not the fools - they just jump right in
- Telling the truth stands the test of time, but lies eventually become exposed.
The book of Proverbs should be read often. If you'll read a chapter every month, you'll eventually become the wisest person your friends will ever know. Think about it!
