Psalms 73-75

The grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence, doesn't it? This thought has passed through a lot of minds - most of which has been for the worst. For King David, he admits that he, too, was almost swayed by this thought. He looked out and saw a great injustice in this world. While he lived a life striving daily to remain Godly, he looked out among those who could care less about God and how happy they were. He saw how rich they had become. While he lived in pain and misery due to challenges in his life, all he saw in the lives of these "fat cats" was a life of happiness and continued success.

He admits his guilt in 73:3 - "For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness." Living for Christ isn't easy. And to look out among the crowds and watch people who lived carelessly both morally, ethically, and spiritually find success and happiness was almost more than what David could bear. He goes on to say, "They seem to live such a painless life...they aren't troubled like other people or plagued with problems like everyone else."

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever just wanted to give up trying to live a Godly life? Have you made the decision that it's just not worth it? King David even asked the question (vs.13), "Was it for nothing that I kept my heart pure and kept myself from doing wrong?"

If you feel like giving in or giving up - DON'T! David eventually came to a sensible conclusion. In fact, it jolted him into reality!  He said in 73:17 - 'Then one day I went into your sanctuary, O God and I thought about the destiny of the wicked." Once David got an eternal perspective on things, he didn't feel so bad after all. For the unbeliever, this world is all they have. It's money, it's parties, and it's trappings - it's all they have. Once this life is over, the destination for those who don't live for God is eternal pain and torment in Hell. Wow! You talk about getting your mind to shift into reality.

King David also said something else that's very important for all of us to remember. He said (vs.21) "How bitter I had become, how pained I had been by all I had seen. I was so foolish and ignorant."

Once David came to his senses he realized he had the most wonderful gift of all - God! He said, "My health may fail, and my spiriti may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever." David saw what each of us needs to see. God is the prize! Having Him is everything. Having His love and a close relationship with Him is all you and I need. And, we will spend an eternity in Heaven rejoicing that we never gave in or gave up!

Psalms 74 is a chapter that shows the heart of King David in his zeal to see God do a mighty work in Israel, just as He did in the days of Moses. He laments in verses 9-10, "We see no miraculous signs as evidence that you will save us. All the prophets are gone; no one can tell us when it will end. How long, O God, will you allow our enemies to mock you?" In this psalm he reminds God that He is powerful and split the sea down the middle for Israel and set the boundaries of the entire earth. David is begging God for a display of His power. David is hungry for the supernatural hand of God to move in Israel. What about you?  When was the last time you begged God to move mightily, miraculously in your life?

To end today's scripture reading, we are reminded to thank God in chapter 75. But note, if you will, the incredible statement King David makes about God in verse 7 - "It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall."

As I read verse 7 - it reminds me of the last presidential election between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The nation was divided and still is. So many people were worried as to who was going to occupy the White House. America became divided over it. But, the fact is, God alone decides who will rise and who will fall.  In one of my Facebook Live videos I shared this very topic. We don't have to worry about anything - God is in control. No matter who became President - God was and is in control. That's exactly the message we need to be reminded of today. Then, we need to pray for our leaders as the Scriptures teach us - "pray for kings and all those in authority that you might lead a quiet and peaceable life."
